Pairs Weekend

Rolfs Lake

Saturday July 27th & Sunday July 28th 2013

Well guess what for a change weekends main event a two-day pairs competition at Rolf’s Lake as if I’d be fishing anywhere else during the summer. After meeting up with my MD friends on Friday a few stragglers arrived this morning including MD’s owner Dave Webster and it was soon down to business with the draw for pairs partners first. I was drawn with fellow Jinxster Terry Goff who I know well from many MD events and our monthly summer meet ups for the Jinx events. Next it was the main draw and today I drew peg 31 a peg i’ve not fished for a couple of years at least and so was looking forward to the challenge. For company I had MD’s very own Red Leader Dave Webster on peg 32 and the Jinx himself Malc Doyle on peg 29, well at least it wouldn’t be a boring day pegged between these two, also in my section John Holdsworth on Peg 28, Kev Loveland on Peg 26, Peter the Mugger Morton on peg 25 and Tony Roberts on peg 23. Todays match being fished from 2pm to 7pm which is usually when the lake fishes it’s best.

My home for the day peg 31.

Rolfs Peg 31

I set up three lines today one at 9mtrs out on a JW .3 Diamond to .22 and .20 hooklength to a size 14 DCF, one at 5mtrs on a .3 JW Diamond to .22 and .20 hooklength to a size 14 DCF and one to my left margin at 3 mtrs on a Garbolino DC8 .1g .25 to .22 and a size 12 DCF.  My bait for today consisting of pellet, paste and 6mm cubed meat, my feed would be dampened 6mm fishery pellet. At the all in I cupped in a pot of damp feed pellet on each of my lines and shipped out to 9mtrs with a 8mm banded  pellet and was soon rewarded with a bite and a nice skimmer came to the net after a few more put ins on that line and a couple more skimmers the float buried and I was into my first carp for the day and nice net carp. I continued on this line for a while catching a few skimmers and hooking and losing a couple of carp. A switch to the 5mtr line brought my second carp of the day to the net a small carp around 3lb and then bites dried up on this line. I switched back to the 9mtr line but could only get little knocks off roach so decided to give the margin a try, first put in on 8mm banded pellet produced a fine double going 13lb 8oz on the scales, I then caught consistently albeit slowly for the next couple of hours in the margin producing carp to 16lb 8oz and then the rain came.

When I say the rain came I mean a summer downpour with the rain bouncing back up 12″ off the lake and within seconds everything and everyone was drenched, I had not brought my water proofs to my peg and it was too late now to bother going to get them so I sat there like a gnome in the rain getting soaked. The rain killed the margin swim and from what I can  gather killed it for almost everyone around the lake bar Mugger on peg 25. Malc didn’t get a bite for the last 1hr and 30 mins and I only managed two carp in the last two hrs both from the 5mtr line and both small net carp.

I ended the match – soaked to the skin and weighed in 100lb 12oz for 3rd in section and took section by double default. Dave Wall won the match from peg 22 with 191lb 8oz with Mugger on peg 25 2nd with 154lb and Malc 3rd with 152lb. A good start to the weekend I managed 9th overall with my partner Terry 13th of peg 35 with 75lb giving us 22 points and 5th overall for day 1.

Sunday’s match was an earlier draw this time fishing 11.30am to 4.30pm, the rain we had at the end of yesterdays match had continued on and off through the night and the usual MD’s BBQ after the saturday match was a non starter, most retired to their tents , cars or caravans to avoid the rain. Sunday morning was dry albeit a bit overcast there were some sunny spells. At the draw I drew peg 22 and my partner Terry drew peg 18 both had fished well yesterday but how would they fish today with the overnight influx of cold water and the earlier start time.

My home for the day  peg 22.

Rolfs Lakes Peg 22

Rolf’s Lake Peg 22

Today I decided to once again fish 4 lines, one at 9mtrs on the deck with a .3 JW Diamond .22 to .20 and a DCF 14, one at 5mtrs in front on a .3 JW Diamond .22 to .20 and a DCF 14, one long to the platform on peg 21 on a KC Carpa 1 4×14 .22 to .20 and a DCF 14 and finally a margin swim at 3mtrs on a Garbolino DC8 .1g tied on .25 to .22 and a size 12 DCF also on this line a HillBilly paste float tied on .25 straight through to a size 10 DCF.

My bait for today consisting of pellet, paste and 6mm cubed meat, my feed would be dampened 6mm fishery pellet. At the start I cupped in a pot of 6mm dampened feed pellet to my four lines and proceeded to fish the 9mtr line which produced no  signs of activity or bites so I re-fed this line and after about 30 mins the float dipped but I did not connect with anything on the strike. I continued for a little while longer on this line but no bites where forthcoming. I tried all the other three of my lines for today, no bites or indications to be found on any line including the margin that had produced so well for Dave Wall yesterday. So I fed two pots of pellet on my 5mtr line and sat on this line for a while when suddenly the float buried and I was into my first carp which soon came to the net, a nice common of around 8lb. I continued on this line for a while but no other bites were to be had. I had been continually feeding the margin and at 3.30pm with an hr to go thought i’d give it another go, after a few put in’s and while feeding pellet over the top my float buried and my second carp came to the net a small carp of about 5lb. I continued in the margin hoping the carp would turn up but alas they did not and I ended the day with just two carp for 13lb 8oz which amazingly gave me 5th in section beating Malc and winning our customary £1 side bet and 21st overall, never expected to beat five others with just two fish. My partner finished just one place above me as we both blew out today and put ourselves out of contention for the pairs trophy ending up in 9th place with 63 points.

Well done to Bagger J (Alex) and Budgie (Marcus) on winning the pairs competition, thanks to Dave Webster for running this fantastic event and Dave Collier for the friday warm up match and of course to John and Pauline Bennett for the use of Rolfs and putting up with us.

Current update on the £1 side bet this year with our very own Jinx Mr Malc Doyle.  Malc has made a comeback after recently after a poor start which saw myself take out a 6 – 1 lead but Malc closed the gap to 7-5 before this weekend and after winning the £1 on Saturday making the score very close I just managed to sneak ahead and keep that 2 point advantage by beating Malc on Sunday’s match by a mere 1 oz, Read em and Weep Mr Doyle.

Nick –  8     Malc – 6

Rolfs lake

Friday July 26th 2013

Fishing at Rolfs again today with some fellow Jinxsters and MD friends as a warm up match for the Maggot Drowning Pairs this Saturday and Sunday.

Once again already at the lake in the caravan so no travelling required and spent the morning meeting and greeting my Maggot Drowing friends a few of which i’d not seen since last years MD Pairs event like Mugger Morton, Geoff the Mog and Bagger J etc. It was good to catch up with you all again for this fine weekend of fun and fishing.

At the draw I was absent as I was making my drinks for the afternoons match and was left with peg 18 in the bag as my home for today, not a peg I usually get on with and have had a few nightmares on this peg, but I decided i’d rise to the challenge and see what I could do with one of my boogie pegs.

Image

I decided to fish 4 lines today, one at 13mtrs along the lefthand bush at 13mtrs with a .3 JW Diamond float on .22 N-Gauge to .20 N-Gauge hook length to a size 14 Drenan Carp Feeder hook. Another line at 9mtrs  straight out again on a JW .3 Diamond on .22 to .20 hook length and a DCF size 14 hook. Another straight out at 5mtrs on a KC Carper 1 4×14 to .22 main .20 hooklength and a size 14 DCF and finally a margin rig to the bush to my right on a Garbolino DC8 .1g on .25 to .22 and a DCF size 12.

As is becoming my usual this year my feed and hook bait was pellet with pellet and for a change as a back up some paste nothing complicated. I will be feeding dampened 6mm fishery pellet and fishing 8mm banded pellet over the top with the option of paste in the margin. I also set up the feeder in case things were hard or I was having trouble getting down to the feeding fish like on wednesday’s open.

At the start of the match I fed all four lines with a pot of 6mm dampened pellet and then shipped out at 13mtrs to the left hand bush and within a few minutes had a bite, and a 2lb skimmer came to the net.  Next put in the float buried and I ws into my first carp which unfortuneately came off whilst shipping back. Next put in and after a couple of minutes wait the float buried again and this time a fine net carp came to the net. After this inital activity no more bites came from this line so after 10 mins I re-fed it and switched to the 9mtr line with 8mm banded pellet which produced a few more skimmers and another net carp.

After two hours of switching between the 9mtr and 13mtr lines I decided to try my short lines at 5mtrs and the margin. A quick look on the 5mtr line produced no bites but first put in on the margin swim produced a positive bite and a nice double came to the net and went 13lb on the scales, next put in and again the float buried and after a few mad runs a nice proper carp came to the net and after queing at the scales with Dave and Christine Collier who was weighing her first carp mine went a whopping 19lb on the scales.

I continued to catch carp from the margin although some long intervals on inactivity as the fish seemed to be drifting in and out I ended the match with 17 carp and a few bream for my personel best weight from this peg of 135lb 10oz and 5th overall and as a bonus picked up the prize for biggest fish. Thanks Dave did’nt even know there was a prize for that so it came as a sweet surprise. Also big thanks to Dave Collier for organising and running this event and for the invite.

Wednesday Open

24th July 2013.

rolfs4

Today I was fishing the Wednesday open again at Rolfs Lake, with no need for any travelling as I’m still resident in my caravan in the car park here, so after an easy lazy morning making breakfast  I met up with lake owner John Bennet and regular Paul Jay to do a spot of maintenance before the match, with John, Paul and Ollie out in the boat pruning the margin overhanging branches and myself and Pauline on the bank collecting the removed branches and roots from the lake and boat as they worked. We pruned the margins in pegs 8,9,10,1,2,3,4,39 & 40 prior to this afternoons draw.

At the draw I chose peg 28 from the bag a peg I seem to draw quite regularly and have got to know quite well over the years, the same peg I drew in last Wednesday’s open and struggles for 31lb off. Today was very different the weather for one was more overcast and cooler as last week it was scorching with no wind or ripple, to day we had a slight breeze blowing down the lake towards peg 39 and a nice ripple and with only 11 anglers showing this week and the majority of them pegged in the little lake that left just Paul Jay on peg 32, Andy Quarmby on peg 9 (end peg motorway bank), John Draper on peg 30 and myself with end peg on the car park bank. Very often drawing an end peg at Rolfs gives you an advantage and today myself, Andy and Paul caught fish well throughout the whole match.

My Home for today.

rolfspeg28

My set up for today consisted of 4 swims one at 9 mtrs with two rigs  a 0.5 JW Chianti float on 0.18 to 0.16 and a size 18 DCF hook for the bream and the same float on .22 to .20 with a size 14 DCF hook for the carp. This to be my main attack line, with a back up/ bagging line at 5mtrs on a JW .3 Diamond .22 to .20 and a 14 DCF hook . I also set up two margin line on to the bush on my right on a 4×12 KC Carper 1 float .22 – .20 and a DCF size 14, and a throw away margin to my left about a metre from the bank in about 2.5ft of water top 2 plus one towards peg 27, this on a 0.1 Garbolino DC8 on .25 – .22 line and a size 12 DCF hook (proper bagging no messing set up lol). Plus I also set up the feeder rod with a small cage, only because I had 15 mins to spare before the start and thought why not since I struggled last week on pole and pellet wag I could always chuck the feeder if things were quiet.

My feed and hook bait for today consisted very simply of pellet with pellet and as a back up some more pellet. Feed wise some dry 6mm pellet and some slightly dampened down 6mm feed pellet which I could also use in the cage feeder. At the start fed the 9mtr line with a toss pot of damp 6mm pellet and the fizzing started almost immediately, fished the bream fig with a 6mm banded pellet and caught a couple of bream early on but was suffering lots of line bites and foul hookers from carp. Tried a shallow and mid depth rig over this line which produced no bites so went back to fishing the deck. Still struggling to get through the mid water fish as the float just would not settle properly. Tried cupping in a big pot of pellets but this did not manage to put the mid water fish on the deck and was continuing to suffer lots of lost foul hookers so tried fishing the feeder over my 9mtr line with an 8mm banded pellet and the tip went straight round with the carp hooked cleanly in the mouth. Continued fishing the feeder on this line for the next hour our or so picking up 10 carp whist hand feeding each margin line with a few pellets every 5 mins or so watching for signs of fish activity at about 2hrs into the match saw a couple of swirls in my left margin so popped the rig in there with an 8mm pellet and after a couple of mins the float sailed away and a nice 11lber was brought to thescales. Continued in the margin for another 10 mins or so and caught a roach aprox 6oz so decided to leave that line alone and continue on the feeder whist drip feeding the margins. Picked up a few more carp on the feeder in the next hour and a half and then fished the left margin again feeding a big handful of 6mm pellet each put in and catching carp to 16lb 8oz from the left margin right up to the whistle ending up with 28 carp and a few bream for 2nd overall weighing in 252lb 10oz and new peg king for peg 28. Winner on the day just one fish ahead was Andy Quarmby on peg 9 with 265lb and 3rd just one fish behind was Paul Jay on peg 32 with 241lb. So I had a very satisfying days fishing, using just the feeder and top two and fishing simple just pellet over pellet.

Welcome

Welcome to Nick ‘Neo’ Williams  new fishing blog.

I have closed the Fish4Wales forum as nobody was using it which meant my blog was lost too as it was hosted there. I will try and see if there is anyway to import the posts to here, if not then I’ll just start a fresh from today.
