Wez Hillier’s 2 Day Rolfs Festival 2014
Day 1 Friday 18/7/2014
Having arrived at the lake yesterday with caravan and family in tow, I was all prepared in advance for this match and hoping a repeat performance of last year when I won the event with a perfect score and two section wins. It was about 30 mins before the draw when I get a phone call from Wez, he’s running late and can I collect the money and sort out the draw and sections for him, this is becoming a habit this year which has seen mw organising Jinx matches for Malc and now for Wez a bit of Deja Vu considering I used to organise about 100 a year not that many years ago lol, so it was water off a ducks back.
So I organised the draw, did the sections and boards etc and drew last which left me peg 32 in the bag, result a good peg normally and a short walk too.
Fished the margin to my right in aprox 2.5ft of water, plumbed up for paste just infront of the left hand bush. Set up a rig for 5mtrs out in front, also a rig down to the platform on peg 33 and one at 10 oclock at 7 mtrs towards peg 8. I also set up a shallow rig just in case.
Armed with the knowledge that Andy Quarmby has set a new lake record for 2014 from this peg on Wednesday’s open with 442lb my expectations from this peg today were quite optomistic, I’m no Andy Quarmby far from it but I was hoping for a doublr ton plus today considering recent the recent form off peg 32.
Today the bites were slow and hard to come by, which seemed to be the case for all of the anglers in the big lake, while the anglers in the small lake were having a much better time of it. I did manage to catch fish on most of my chosen lines but only the odd fish or two from each and in most cases a different method each time. I had a couple shallow, another on meat, one on corn before getting the fish the settle on my 5 mtr line in the last hour on banded pellet and managed to put 113lb 7oz on the scales for 3rd in section and 6th overall. Not exactly how I’d imagined it after drawing peg 32 but at least not a complete disaster with Barry Tucker taking 2nd with 131-15 and Mick Jones 1st in section with 157-7, I will have to pull all the stops out tomorrow now if I am to win this event like I did last year. Anyone know where I can get a MIRACLE on the cheap.

Day 2 Saturday 19/7/2014
Today I drew my nemesis peg, peg 2 so that miracle would be needed today. Peg 2 and myself have never gelled, I don’t know what it is about this peg but I have never managed a decent result from it and until the night match last week had not ever had a ton from it in fact not even managed 50lb the previous times I have fished it and I beleive my average weight from this peg over all the many years i’ve fished it to be somewhere around 18lb – 20lb ish. Even so with all that history with peg 2 I still approached the task with optomism and had decided to fish it positively. I set up the same as I do on all pegs here at Rolfs, which is both margins and a line 5mtrs in front and is pretty much standard for anywhere here at Rolfs Lake, in addition to these set up one rig down to the platform on peg 3 and likewise to the platform on peg 1, also a line 8mtrs in front, a rig for shallow, one for paste which I could adjust to use on any of these lines and the feeder and pellet waggler. So pretty much every base covered with the exception of fishing 16mtrs down the left margin into the corner snag pit of tangled roots and branches. I’ve chosen not to fish this approach not because I don’t think it will produce but more to the fact that I could not physically fish that long for any given length of time due to my long standing chronic back problems, hence why I always fish as short as I can get away with. Now then I’ve waffled on about my dislikes of peg 2 and my history with afore mention peg as there’s not a great deal to say about the match as I failed yet again to produce any magic or miracles this time either, although I did catch more than I normally do putting 65lb on the scales and even beating yesterday’s section winner Mick Jones on peg 8 but 65lb and 5th in section was never going to win anything and one of thesedays i’m so going to master peg 2, after all I get enough practice at it as I seem to draw it and peg 40 on the bottom bank often enough lol.
Oh well this years event is all over now and congratulations to the Winners Dean,Barry and John. Lets hope I get some better luck next year and give it another shot at regaining my title LMAO.
