Match 2 – 30th May 2015 Rolfs Lake

Rolfs Lake , Oxford

Rolfs Lake

Match two of this years Jinx Series and my section for today is A section in the small lake and also will be fishing against previous Jinx winner Clive Pritchard in the knock out cup, so hoping for a favourable draw today. I arrived at the lake early with my tools on board as Dai needed help with the electrics in his caravan, after inital checks were carried out the fault was diagnosed as a faulty charger unit and a new one was soon fitted job done now on to the fishing.

Today’s match was draw 12ish fish 2pm to 7pm, I don’t think anyone reads the series details as everyone was early. even Malc was there well before draw time. After the usual meet and great it was soon time for the draw and a couple of announcements explaining how we will now be witnessing and recording weighers it was time to draw, I drew peg 36 which I was more than happy with as having had good results off it the few times I’ve fished it one of which was the recent Jinx night match, although the pegs on the end bank 40 & 2 would also have been a good draw with the wind pushing fish down that end, so I was glad to see both pegs taken by guests today.

Nick Williams Peg 36

Nick Williams Peg 36 Rolfs Lake

At the start Dean on peg 2 and Julie (mummy minx) Doyle were quickly into fish and continued to catch at an alarming rate in the early stages of the match while myself, Simon on peg 34 , Nick WP on peg 5 and Kev on peg 4 sat there fishless. The only bites we were getting were from roach. Two hours went by and still no sign of any carp feeding at our end of the small lake. I had three lines on the go, one at 6mtrs in front and a margin swim each side close in which I kept feeding hoping the carp would turn up soon. Simon had one weigher of 17lb 8oz and one in the net and Kev one carp on the feeder before I had my first carp bite almost 3 hrs into the match on 4mm banned pellet, yes I was looking for bream on small pellet. By this time Julie had 5 carp and Nick WP just hooked into a carp so I had my work cut out now if I was to catch up. I continued to feed the 6mtr line after every bite via pole pot with dampened 4mm fishing 4mm banded pellet on the hook. I kept plugging away at this line managing to land 2 weighers and 5 net fish and a few bream for a total of 63-01 which was enough to secure section by default and just avoid a mummy minxing from Julie who weighed in 58lb 110z.

Dean Townsend fishing as a guest won the lake today with 135lb 5oz with Neil Riddy in B section catching his second ton of the series and a section win in both Jinx matches this year.

Jinx 2015 Night Match

Jinx 2015 Night Match

Friday 8th May 2015

Rolfs Lake

The first of the night matches at Rolf’s Lake this year and an opener for the start of the 2015 Jinx Series, which I am organising at Malc’s request due to his work commitments this year. Twelve anglers took part under the floodlights including Mrs Jinx, Julie Doyle fishing her first ever match, I would be shadowing her and helping with unhooking fish and tieing hooks etc, so it was agreed I would fish the nearest adjacent peg to the one Julie draws which turned out to be peg 36 with Julie on peg 38.

Congratulations to Ernie and Riddler on their double tons. Thanks all for attending and to John & Pauline for their hospitality at the lake.

Jinx 2015 2 Day Opener

Jinx 2015 2 Day Match at Rolfs Lake Oxford.

This year’s pre series opener event was poorly attended with only 12 anglers taking part that said a great time was had by all with plenty of banter and fun. As usual Malc was late, well it just wouldn’t be a Jinx match if he wasn’t late. He was even late starting day 2 as he was snugged up in bed with Julie in the van while the rest of us were drawing our pegs, some things never change.

Keith Stent was this year’s deserved winner with a perfect performance wining his section on both days, well done Keith. Paul Roberts produced a surprised battering for Malc off the next peg on Saturdays match a rare occurrence to ne much savoured and remembered by him.

Eddie on the other hand was having a nightmare on favoured peg 9 and ended up recording a big fat zero from peg 9 which had been kind to him in the previous Wednesday open match.

This year Malc has handed the reins to myself to organize something that I have done many times before but was under the impression I had given up match organizing a few years back, but to be honest until last year when I was asked to step in and help out with the Jinx had not realize how much I miss that side of things.

I would like to thank all that took part and made the event friendly and fun and thank lake owners John & Pauline for accommodating us once again.

Jinx Series 2014 – Match 5 – Rolfs Lake – 16-8-2014

The penultimate Jinx Match of the 2014 series today at Rolfs Lake, travelling down from Yew Tree Caravan Park which is 90 miles from Rolfs so a shorter than usual journey. On arriving I met up with Rolf’s Resident Dai Thomas for a coffee before getting my gear out of storage from the container at Rolfs as I had left it behind after the last visit knowing I would not be using it until today.

A phone call from Malc at around 10am, which was expected asking me to run the match as he hadn’t yet left Gemma and Simon’s house, nothing new here then this year, which I was happy to do, well at least there’s one thing I’m good at, even though I can’t catch a fish in an aquarium this year I could at least serve a purpose and organise lol.

The draw was made at 11am and peg 38 was drawn for Malc in his absence, I would be fishing B section today and drew peg 9 which is quite a good draw normally, but then again it has me on it today so an example on how not to do it would be on the cards.

Dai who had won Wednesday’s open from peg 4 with 272lb drew next door with peg 5 and seemed to carry on where he left off, as I witnessed fish after fish on the scales, between Dai and Fred on peg 8, it seemed I was permanently turned around watching the weigh scales, which at least gave me something to do as I was not catching anything or even getting and bites of indications.

In fact I did not get any fish for 3hrs 45mins, when I had my first bite and a fish a carp of around 3lb. I had begun to wonder if I was going to blank at Rolfs, something I’ve not done for many years. I had fished fish 5 different lines both on the deck and up in the water, from a few inches off bottom to a few inches shallow on all kinds of different baits without as much as a nibble. My main approach had been to feed ground bait in the margins and fish pellet or meat over this, which I had been trying for the first 4 hrs without success, so I topped up my margin once more and went for a walk up to peg 5 to see Dai and see where and on what he was catching so many. It turned out he was fishing the margin with banded pellet over dampened micros mixed with ground bait which was exactly what I was doing without success. After which I returned to my peg and once again tried my margin swim and to my surprise the float buried and I was into a decent carp at last, unfortunately the hook snapped on this occasion, but a new hook length was soon fitted and swim topped up again I was into a carp once again with 20 minutes to go, in that time I managed 8 carp all bar one were small net fish with one weigher of 10lb 8oz which produced 51lb 15oz at the scales for 5th in section and 12th overall and yet again a case of too little too late, which has been the story of my Jinx series this year. Now if I can only sort out something to pick up a few carp during the first 4hrs 30mins of a match I’ll be ok lol.

MD’s Pairs Weekend – Rolfs Lake – 26/27-07-2014

MD’s Pairs Weekend – Rolfs Lake – 26/27-07-2014

The Maggotdrowner’s Pairs Weekend has been running for some 10 yrs. or more now and I have attended most years as this event is more than just a fishing competition it’s more about the banter and fun taking part with a friendly competition among friends and this year was no different with plenty of banter, pee taking etc. with the whole event making a very enjoyable and fun weekend, a big thanks to organiser and MD’s owner Dave Webster for arranging this every year and John and Pauline for providing Rolfs Lake for us all to fish at.

Day 1 – Saturday 26th July 2014

The first order of the day was for us to draw our pair’s partner and this year my partner was Chrissy, Dave Collier’s daughter. At the draw Chrissy drew peg 34 which is usually good for a few fish and I drew peg 2, oh dear that’s not a good start. Peg 2 for those that have followed my blog will know is my nemeses peg, one of the few pegs at Rolfs I really struggle on, although this weekend I don’t think it will make any difference as I seem capable of messing up any peg lol.

With the fact that Rolfs is fishing well this weekend I decided to approach the task of peg 2 by fishing it positively and attacking the peg with the hope that either there would be fish already in the swim willing to feed or I could draw them there and get them to feed. It at least sounded like a good idea, it didn’t work or perhaps more to the point I failed to make it work as I spent most of the match bite less and fishless. A few did turn up very late on the right margin tight into the roots 2mts (top kit) away, nowhere near where I had fed (top2 plus 2) down either margin. Three carp from here in the last 10 mins and a bream I managed to catch at 5mtrs in front earlier on really made no difference as I still managed to end the day dead last with 34lb 4oz, um sorry partner you got a bum draw I’m afraid. Oh well there’s always day 2.

Day 2 – Sunday 27th July 2014

An earlier draw and start/finish times today and at least I didn’t draw peg 2 again, phew! I did however draw peg 28 a peg I’m normally quite comfortable on and usually catch well from this peg, unfortunately today would not be one of my better days on peg 28 lol in fact it’s not been my day on any peg this year bar my first match which was a night match on peg 10 when I caught quite well, on reflection it’s been steadily downhill ever since. A very frustrating day on 28 today with fish showing in my left margin and yet again me showing my lack of ability to catch them, the last time I remember this many fish in 28’s margin I put over 250lb on the scales today I came up 200lb short of that when 250lb would have won the day, oh well another opportunity missed, story of my life these days, think I’ll try using a hook next time lol.

Dave Collier’s Invite – Rolfs Lake 25-7-2014

This time of year brings the Maggotdrowning Pairs Weekend which is the pinnacle of my MD year and an event I always try to attend whenever possible. The pair’s weekend is preceded most years by today’s match organised by Dave Collier as a sort of taster for the main event and this year almost all of the anglers fishing the pairs attended the Friday opener. The day started with the usual hustle and bustle of arriving people unloading their vehicles and setting up camp on the grass area behind peg 34. This weekend is a good time to catch up with fellow MDers many of whom I only see on this weekend, and others who I meet up regularly with at the Jinx events. For myself it was an easy morning meeting and greeting and watching others work as they pitched their tents, myself of course like my fellow welsh contender Dai Thomas were already set up at the lake in our respective caravans and were just awaiting to book in and draw our pegs.

The draw was held at 11.30pm with fishing from 1.30pm to 6.30pm and today I drew peg 16, the hottest peg on the lake where I was sure to bake in the sun today if nothing else. I had high expectations for today as peg 16 fished well on Wednesday’s open and plenty of fish could be seen cruising in the area so I was happy with my draw, my fellow welsh buddy Dai also drew well with peg 32.

Peg 16 at Rolfs

I decided to keep things simple today so elected to fish both margins and a line straight out at 5 mtrs with a long line out at 13mtrs to pick off some early carp and maybe a few bream whilst I fed the margins. This all seemed fairly simple all I needed to do was catch the fish, hmm well yes that was the idea at least. I did manage a couple of bream and a carp of 11lb off the long line in the early stages, but soon became distracted by the tails and number of fish in my right margin, now the frustration starts as however hard I tried and whatever methods I employed I just could not connect with the fish today. Trying different baits presented just on, just off, hard on the bottom and shallow still I failed to hook carp properly resulting in too many foul hookers and lost fish. A very frustrating day indeed as the rest of the lake seemed to fish well with Adam on peg 26 weighing in a double ton to win the match and many other 100+ weights to back that up. Rolfs Lake has been fishing really well of late with most anglers reaping the benefits, unfortunately I’m not fishing too good at present which the results clearly show, although the anglers on pegs 13 and 14 didn’t fair very well today either. The fact that I’m typing up these reports almost a week after the event gives me the knowledge of how this peg fished with other anglers on it with Clive and Peter drawing it on Saturday and Sunday and returning weights of 228lb and 226lb respectively it only goes to show what I could have and should have achieved from this peg which only adds to my frustration the only consolation if you can call it that and in my defence is this year I have been struggling with my health and the nerve damage to my back and shoulders maybe causing more problems than I give them credit for and most likely my hand eye co-ordination is slow these days as I’ve not managed to return any big weights at Rolfs or anywhere else for that matter, and by big weights I mean over 150lb. Anyway enough of the sob story and excuses I fished like a cock so deserve what I got, ending up with 31lb odd and down near the bottom of the pack.

Wezs Hillier’s 2Day Event – Rolfs Lake 18/19-07-2014

Wez Hillier’s 2 Day Rolfs Festival 2014

Day 1 Friday 18/7/2014

Having arrived at the lake yesterday with caravan and family in tow, I was all prepared in advance for this match and hoping a repeat performance of last year when I won the event with a perfect score and two section wins. It was about 30 mins before the draw when I get a phone call from Wez, he’s running late and can I collect the money and sort out the draw and sections for him, this is becoming a habit this year which has seen mw organising Jinx matches for Malc and now for Wez a bit of Deja Vu considering I used to organise about 100 a year not that many years ago lol, so it was water off a ducks back.

So I organised the draw, did the sections and boards etc and drew last which left me peg 32 in the bag, result a good peg normally and a short walk too.

Peg 32 Rolfs

Rolfs Lake Peg 32

Fished the margin to my right in aprox 2.5ft of water, plumbed up for paste just infront of the left hand bush. Set up a rig for 5mtrs out in front, also a rig down to the platform on peg 33 and one at 10 oclock at 7 mtrs towards peg 8. I also set up a shallow rig just in case.

Armed with the knowledge that Andy Quarmby has set a new lake record for 2014 from this peg on Wednesday’s open with 442lb my expectations from this peg today were quite optomistic, I’m no Andy Quarmby far from it but I was hoping for a doublr ton plus today considering recent the recent form off peg 32.

Today the bites were slow and hard to come by, which seemed to be the case for all of the anglers in the big lake, while the anglers in the small lake were having a much better time of it. I did manage to catch fish on most of my chosen lines but only the odd fish or two from each and in most cases a different method each time. I had a couple shallow, another on meat, one on corn before getting the fish the settle on my 5 mtr line in the last hour on banded pellet and managed to put 113lb 7oz on the scales for 3rd in section and 6th overall. Not exactly how I’d imagined it after drawing peg 32 but at least not a complete disaster with Barry Tucker taking 2nd with 131-15 and Mick Jones 1st in section with 157-7, I will have to pull all the stops out tomorrow now if I am to win this event like I did last year. Anyone know where I can get a MIRACLE on the cheap.

Day 2 Saturday 19/7/2014

Today I drew my nemesis peg, peg 2 so that miracle would be needed today. Peg 2 and myself have never gelled, I don’t know what it is about this peg but I have never managed a decent result from it and until the night match last week had not ever had a ton from it in fact not even managed 50lb the previous times I have fished it and I beleive my average weight from this peg over all the many years i’ve fished it to be somewhere around 18lb – 20lb ish. Even so with all that history with peg 2 I still approached the task with optomism and had decided to fish it positively. I set up the same as I do on all pegs here at Rolfs, which is both margins and a line 5mtrs in front and is pretty much standard for anywhere here at Rolfs Lake, in addition to these set up one rig down to the platform on peg 3 and likewise to the platform on peg 1, also a line 8mtrs in front, a rig for shallow, one for paste which I could adjust to use on any of these lines and the feeder and pellet waggler. So pretty much every base covered with the exception of fishing 16mtrs down the left margin into the corner snag pit of tangled roots and branches. I’ve chosen not to fish this approach not because I don’t think it will produce but more to the fact that I could not physically fish that long for any given length of time due to my long standing chronic back problems, hence why I always fish as short as I can get away with.  Now then I’ve waffled on about my dislikes of peg 2 and my history with afore mention peg as there’s not a great deal to say about the match as I failed yet again to produce any magic or miracles this time either, although I did catch more than I normally do putting 65lb on the scales and even beating yesterday’s section winner Mick Jones on peg 8 but 65lb and 5th in section was never going to win anything and one of thesedays i’m so going to master peg 2, after all I get enough practice at it as I seem to draw it and peg 40 on the bottom bank often enough lol.

Oh well this years event is all over now and congratulations to the Winners Dean,Barry and John. Lets hope I get some better luck next year and give it another shot at regaining my title LMAO.

Jinx Match 4 – Rolfs Lake 12-07-2014

Jinx Match 4 of 2014 which I will be running today in Malc’s absence. Malc has hurt his back at work and is unable to fish this weekend so I will deputising today, god help everyone.

Looking forward to today’s match after catching fish at last of peg 2 in last night’s match. Peg 2 has been my bogey peg for many years which I have systematically and spectacularly failed to catch fish off over the many years I have fished at Rolfs Lake. Today I drew the peg almost next door Peg 40, a peg I am fairly familiar with as I draw this peg quite often. Peg 40 can be an all or nothing peg and has a tendency to come alive late into the match and today was no different having struggled for bites all day as had my neighbour Clive on peg 2 the carp decided to turn up in numbers about 10 mins from the end of the match. I managed to put 84lb 4oz on the scales for 5th place in section and yet another Jinx failure this year, maybe by the end of the series I will catch a decent bag of fish in this years series.
